DescriptionDetail of second section of panorama of Ipswich in 1865, taken from Limestone Hill. This photograph was from the collection of Biggingee Sorabjee Poochee, a photographer in Ipswich between 1864 and 1877. Poochee had a studio for a short time in 1863 at the corner of Bell and Union Streets, Ipswich. (Information taken from; Safier, Marcel, 'Early photographers of Ipswich, Queensland', 2006, retrieved 17 July 2008, from website). Claremont is the large roofed building in the centre of the image. Just to the left is the Bank of New South Wales and the Palais Royal. Further along Brisbane Street is the School of Arts (later Town Hall, now Ipswich Art Gallery [2014]), St Paul’s Anglican Church, and the Cribb and Foote building. At the back of the image on the right are some of the early buildings of Ipswich Grammar School. The long roofed building at the far right of the image is the Railway Station and the two story square building (also on the right, towards the front of image) was George Thorn’s store, formerly John Panton’s.
