Ipswich Grammar School

Timeline:

1861 - Tuesday August 27th, resolution for the establishment of a Grammar School was passed at the Ipswich Court House by 281 votes to 199.

1862 - Trustees elected by ballot March 25th.

1862 - Advertisement for the first headmaster 12th May 1862.

1862 - Original Architect Mr Benjamin Backhouse May 22.

1862 - Construction of first building went to Mr John Ferguson and Mr David McLaughlin - their quote 2890 pounds.

1863 - First Headmaster appointed. Stuart Hawthorne, a graduate of the University of Sydney, and Queensland's first Governor, was the first headmaster of Ipswich Grammar School (1863-1868).

1863 - Official opening 25th September, by Sir G F Bowen, Governor of Queensland.

1863 - School Opening 7th October with 16 scholars, 4 staff, plus the Headmaster.

1868 - School visit by the HRH Prince Alfred (Duke of Edinburgh).

1869 - Second Headmaster, Mr John McCrae (1869-1875).

1870 - First football match played between Ipswich and Brisbane Grammar schools under the Australian or "Melbourne" rules.  The outcome was a draw.
