Established in 1916 as the State Accident Insurance Office, the name soon changed to State Government Insurance Office (SGIO).

SGIO offered life insurance, general insurance and Compulsory Third Party, later extending services to include superannuation, building society and finance operations.

The name changed again to Suncorp and the insurer remained Queensland Government owned until 1996, when it merged with the public listed company Metway Bank, creating the allfinanz group Suncorp Metway.

In Ipswich, SGIO was first located at 205 Brisbane street, before moving to new premises at 134 Brisbane Street in 1958, on the site of the former A.C.B Sell for Less Store.
