1918 Block Maps

In 1918, the State Government Insurance Office did a detailed survey of Ipswich Central.  

The Block Maps are a rich resource of information on the buildings and businesses of Ipswich during the Inter-War period.  Details in the map include:

• Dimensions of all main buildings
• Location of windows and doors in main buildings
• Building features, such as lantern lights
• Location and type of out buildings
• Names of businesses 
• Business types
• Name of business owners
• A colour code to indicate building material
  • Red - brick
  • Blue - tin / iron
  • Yellow - timber
