Fox Pharmacy

W. F .S. Fox qualified and registered as a chemist in 1894/95. Shortly after qualifying he opened his first pharmacy at the "top of Brisbane Street".

In 1896 the business moved to a new building at 106 Brisbane Street located opposite the junction of Bell Street.  This brick building was designed by George Brockwell Gill and consisted of 3 shops. Mr P. Brown was the contractor. Cast iron was supplied by S. Shillito & Son. Plumbing performed by B. Welsby. Painting by Wallace & Minett with plastering by John Jamieson. Arthur Knight did the artistic lettering on doors and windows.

The building was owned by Mrs Watson who was the wife of Richard Watson, and mother of William F. S. Fox. Fox was to run his druggist business from a shop in the upper premises. The centre shop was taken by W. M. Payne a stationer and bookseller. The lower shop at street level became that of Joseph Rose. 

In earlier years Fox supplied Ipswich Hospital.

By 1997, four generations of the Fox family had been involved in the business, then located at 106 Brisbane Street.

The Fox family lived at Bowerbank, Ellenborough Street, Denmark Hill.
