Description
DescriptionTracing the life of George Thorn, a prominent member of Ipswich during the town’s early years. George Thorn was born in 1806 in Stockbridge, England. He came to Australia in 1832 whilst serving in the army. In 1837 when the regiment transferred to India, he opted to stay in Australia at that time in New South Wales. He met Jane Handcock and they married in 1837. In 1839 they moved to Limestone (Ipswich as it was then called) and Jane became the first free white woman in Ipswich. George was the first representative in Parliament for Ipswich. He would be an alderman on the Ipswich council and a foundation member of the Ipswich Grammar School. His family would at one time live on the corner of Brisbane and East Streets, that would become the Palais Royal Hotel and then Bendigo Bank (2013), and at Claremont on Milford Street. This publication was a recipient of the Viva Cribb Bursary 2016.
