From the Ipswich Yearbook, Volume 1, 1977-1978, p.58
Population, as of 30th June 1978, estimated to be 72,500 with a growth rate during the intercestal period 1971/1976 exceeding 2% a year. Moreton Region Growth Strategy Study projects that by 2000, the population with be 110,000.
1971 Census breakdown on the Ipswich workforce:
- 4.6% Agriculture & Mining
- 26.7% Manufacturing
- 16.5% Wholesale & Retail
- 47.7% Other Tertiary
- 4.5% Unemployed and not stated
ABS 1971 Census on Housing and Population showed that 4,877 or 21% commuted out of Ipswich to work and that 1,235 non-residents worked in Ipswich.
