Anthony's General Drapers
Cash & Carry Drapery opened on Wednesday 16 October 1935 in the Trades Hall Building in Nicholas Street, Ipswich. Jack Anthony was named as the manager of the establishment. He possibly started as manager and progressed to proprietor. Stock offered for sale during their first week were: men's flannelette pyjamas, geisha silk, carbolic soap, blue lined envelopes, unbleached sheeting, bath towels and silk stockings.
By at least August 1939 the business at 3 Nicholas Street was known as Anthony's General Drapers. The firm continued to trade here until about mid 1947. At this time, Anthony's General Drapers were dealing in children's frocks, school hats, unbleached calico, school tunics, boy's athletic singlets and linen school blouses. During the 1940s the business is referred to as Jack Anthony's and then simply Anthony's.
On 20 November 1946, Anthony's opened another shop in the old Vic Jensen's shoe store located at 187-189 Brisbane Street. Anthony's then had 2 stores in the centre of Ipswich for some months. The Nicholas Street establishment appears to have closed in 1947. Sometime after this move, Anthony's opened a dress shop upstairs at 191 Brisbane Street which was next door to Anthony's Drapers. This business was Anthony's Frock Salon. Both establishments traded until at least 1953.
Jack Anthony lived at Dorrington, 88 Chermside Road, Ipswich.
