The Mayor, A.G. Hastings in his message in the "Ipswich Yearbook, Vol 1, 1977-78" wrote:

The City is now undergoing a metamorphosis, and the transformation is clearly evident in the new buildings under construction. The impetus for this stems from a broadly based industrial economy which continues to provide employment opportunities for the City's expanding workforce.

 

The provision of community welfare services is being progressively expanded and is epitomised by the establishment of Child Care Centres and the services available within the new Ipswich Humanities Centre together with the many facilities provided by Church organisations.
