Regal Cafe

George and Jim Kentrotis owned and worked the cafe for 36 years.The Regal opened on Wednesday 19 March 1941 and closed in 1977 when George retired. 

The Regal Cafe was located on Brisbane Street between Ellenborough Street and Nicholas Street, beside Bayards and three doors from Londy's Cafe where George Kentrotis had been employed in earlier days. The building was demolished in 1986 to make way for the re-development of the CBD and construction of the new Nicholas Street mall. Just prior to demolition Korvettes secondhand record business was trading on this site. After the re-development, this site would be used for a medical centre for a number of years.

Before the Kentrotis brothers opened the Regal it was known as the Royal Cafe. The cafe was long and narrow. There was an art deco soda fountain, and an espresso machine in latter decades. Fruit drinks were served as well as milk shakes, ice cream sodas, toasted sandwiches, fruit salad, meat pies with chips and gravy, and chicken & vegetable dinners. Opening hours were 6am to 11 pm, with midnight closing on Friday and Saturday. 

It is probable that in 1918 Stratigos & Co. oyster saloon traded where the Regal Cafe eventually stood on Brisbane Street, Ipswich.
