Bayards
George Arthur Bayard started his business in 1883, opening several Brisbane suburban branch stores and a department store in Ipswich. Bayards bought the premises located next to the Commonwealth Bank in Brisbane Street in March 1925 from S. Fifer who in turn had bought James Richey's drapery in 1919.
George Bayard managed the Ipswich store.
George and Jackie Bayard lived at Rosemount, 3 Tregair Street, Newtown. When George died suddenly in 1933 his 4 sons, and eventually 3 grandsons carried on the business. Henry Bayard managed the Ipswich store until his death in 1953.
Bayards ceased trading on 30 June 1982 after 99 years in business. The Ipswich site was to be sold by tender.
The building was demolished in 1985/86 as part of the Ipswich CBD revitalisation project, following the fire at Reids department store.
Before Bayards occupied the location, Lang's boot shop and the White Arcade both traded here.
