Ipswich was home to many, including Londy’s, Marendy’s and the Ritz, City, Regal and Sydney Cafès. This illustrated talk will bring back memories for some and reveal a cafè culture that existed long before espresso and ‘smashed avo’ hit the menu.
About the PresenterDr Toni Risson is a storyteller and a cultural historian who has penned everything from children’s picture books to a PhD on the magic of lollies. An expert on the Greek cafe phenomenon, Toni curated Meet Me at the Paragon for the State Library of Queensland, and her latest book, Brisbane’s Greek Cafes: A Million Malted Milks, was a finalist in the 2019 Queensland Literary Awards. Having been an art teacher in another life, Toni is an active member of her local arts community. She won the Ipswich City Council Australia Day Cultural Award in 2021.
Between writing short stories and documenting our lost cafe culture, Toni loves listening to older people. She encourages them to write their stories down: “It may seem an ordinary life to you but it’s one we’ll never see again”. Toni is also President of Women Writers Queensland.References (online)Aphrodite and the Mixed Grill: Gender and Ethnic Relations in Ipswich's Greek Cafes from 1900 to 2005Read More At Ipswich LibrariesAphrodite and the Mixed Grill: Greek Cafes in twentieth-century Australia, by Toni RissonReference IDGMT20230228-080012_Recording_1686x768Asset TypeWebinar / Talk - MP4Copyright NoticeTo use this image, please contact the Picture Ipswich Digital Archivist.CopyrightPicture Ipswich Copyright InformationBusinessesRose's Emporium Sydney Fruit MarketSydney CafeCity CafeAustralia CafeIthaca CafeRegal CafeMetro CafeRitz CafeCentral CafePremier Oyster Saloon Penglis' Fruit ShopWhitehouse's CafeOlympia CafeRoyal CafeParis CafeRitz TheatrePeople & FamiliesPeter LemnosJack CassimatisGeorge KentrotisNick StrathisHarry TanosChristopher TanosJim StrategosConstantinos HaniankisJohn Dennis BlackLondy familyPeter SpathisHarry (Leondarakis) LondyMick (Leondarakis) LondyCoplin familySamios familyBacelie 'Bossie' MartooMarcellos familyEsther Brewer Pat CassimatisSubjectsGreek cafesMigrationOyster saloons Oyster barsMilk barsCurated CollectionsCafes & RestaurantsWhat's For Dinner?Chasing Our Past At HomeDefining Tulmur | IpswichBecoming A City: FoodBecoming A City: Business & RetailBecoming A City: MigrationAdversity & Resilience: Entertainment & The ArtsExpanding Horizons: Migration
