John Livingstone Auld was born on 29 January 1856 in Scotland. He married Susannah Mills in 1880 and three years later they arrived in Queensland. They lived in the Bundamba district and he worked as an engine drivers at coal mines in that area. He went on to co-own the Aberdare, Bogside, Ferney Creek and Wattle Glen Collieries.
John was a member of the Mine Managers' Association (Queensland), the West Moreton Coal Owners' Association, Protestant Alliance Friendly Society of Australia and he was an honoured vice-president of the Monte Football Club.
John was a prolific poet with many of his poems appearing in the Brisbane newspapers. One of his poems is reproduced in Ray Whitmore's book titled 'Coal in Queensland'.
