In July 1896, Ipswich photographer Francis Whitehead was summoned to attend Government House, Brisbane 'for the purpose of taking some photographs'. This he clearly did with great success. The Queensland Times reported a few days later that Whitehead had taken 'several remarkably good photographs of his Excellency Lord Lamington' and had also taken 'some very interesting views....of the interior of Government House'. In August, Lord Lamington showed his approval by officially placing Whitehead Studios under his patronage, and by inviting Whitehead back to Government House to photography Lady Lamington and one-month old infant son.

So often in a quest to answer one question we only succeed in raising more questions. Why just weeks after portraits of the Lamingtons were taken and published by Wiley's Studio in Brisbane was an Ipswich photographer sent for? Why was Whitehead selected from the four Ipswich photographers? And most pressing, what happened to those 'interesting' interior photos of Government House?
