Prince Alfred Hotel

Denis Bergin was the owner and first licensee of the Prince Alfred Hotel on Brisbane Road, Booval in 1842.  Bergin was also a local coal mine owner. The Bergins owned the pub until the late 1890s. 

In 1891 a new 2-storey pub was completed featuring a six feet wide covered verandah, 2 balconies, 2 parlours, a bar and cellar, coffee room, 4 bedrooms and stained glass side-lights or windows. J. Farrelly was the architect of the new building and Sydney Ash the contractor. Plumbing was installed by Hanby & Dangerfield, and castings were supplied by Hancock Bros. John Reilly was the licensee of the new hotel. 

In 1960 the hotel was offered for sale and was scheduled for demolition to make way for a new pub however it was destroyed by fire in 1961. It was rebuilt and  re-opened in 1963. 

The PA as it is known to locals is now over 175 years old and has been owned by the Johnson family since 1987 when they purchased from brewery chain Carlton. Renovations performed in 1989 saw demolition of 7 motel units located at the rear of the hotel. 

With no lapses in licensing, the PA is thought to be the longest running pub in Queensland. 

The PA won Australian Hotel of the Year 2017 at the Australian Hotel Awards. 

Further upgrades and expansion of the hotel, its car park, beer garden and bottle shop, is planned for 2023.
