Hoopers Carpet One
In 1902 Henry Tivoli Hooper established H T Hooper & Company by purchasing the soap works in Churchill from Mr W Hancock.
In 1919 Henry’s son Fred joined the company then Fred’s son John began working in the family wholesale grocery business. (Information taken from Queensland and Queenslanders: Incorporating “Prominent Queenslanders” compiled by Australian History Publishing Co., Brisbane). John then opened a furniture store that also sold a few rolls of carpet. This company went on to become Hooper’s Carpet One, focusing on carpet and floor coverings. Hoopers Carpet One was established in Ellenborough Street (beside Bottle Alley) about 1958, and then at 3 Foote Lane (next to Court House), before moving to 63 Brisbane Street at the corner of Marsden Parade.
Andrew, son of John and Margaret Hooper, led the business until his death in 2012. Carol, widow of Andrew is now the owner-director of Hoopers Carpet One at 458 Warwick Road, Yamanto. The store moved to this site at the end of 2015/early 2016.
