DescriptionIpswich Grammar School Century Appeal, Ipswich, 1959. IGS was the first official secondary school in Queensland and the first grammar school. The school was opened in 1863 and fundraising efforts were made for a new classroom block in the lead up to its centenary. Head of the fundraising committee was V.Mc.L. Hancock and the headmaster at the time was B.V. Heath. Sponsorship came from many well-known local businesses, including The Queensland Times, Cribb & Foote, W.J. Berry & Co., A.M. Johnson, Ipswich Woollen Mills, Mining and Hardware, Walker and Walker, Shewans Pharmacy, W. McQueen, Rhonda Colliery, F. McMahon, F.A. Whitehead, H.T. Hooper & Co., Queensland Woollen Mills, Rylance Colliery, Scotts of Ipswich, and Bayards.
