Description
DescriptionA diesel train engine crosses the Sadliers Crossing bridge. The rail bridge spans Tallon Street and the Bremer River.Additional Information In order to provide through running from the west to Brisbane without reversing at Ipswich, and to save two miles transit, a deviation was built at Ipswich running east from today's Wulkuraka to the centre of Ipswich instead of following the north bank of the Bremer. This deviation with a new bridge over the Bremer River, opened on 26 April 1875. The deviation like the Brisbane extension, was built as single track. The bridge at Sadlier's Crossing was an iron superstructure on timber piers, similar to that at Lockyer Creek, in was stated in 1895.
In 1899 it was decided to duplicate the railway between Ipswich and Brisbane Valley Junction (then name for today's Wulkuraka). This required a new bridge at Sadlier's Crossing over the Bremer River. It was stated in the press that regrading between Ipswich and Rosewood made this necessary but it is more likely that the need to strengthen the line for heavier locomotives was the main reason. Material and plant for the new bridge was bought in February 1900 and work began.
The substructure was ordered from McCormick & Sons.4 By mid 1901 all the timber work in the bridge had been completed and the 33 and 50 feet steel spans had been positioned. The work was completed and the bridge opened for traffic in March 1902. The double track was operated as two single lines, one towards Rosewood, the other for the Brisbane Valley branch.
Duplication and reduction of grades between Ipswich and Grandchester began in July 1914. The two single lines were converted into double line to Wulkuraka and when the extra track was completed, double line working was introduced between Wulkuraka and Walloon in mid 1916.
