DescriptionLooking towards Ipswich. Redbank Railway Station opened in 1874, with the line connecting Ipswich to Brisbane City at Roma Street Railway Station in 1876.Additional Information Redbank was one of the original stations on the Ipswich Brisbane line, opening in 1874. Office, shelter shed and siding were built in 1879. However as early as 1876 trains crossed at Redbank and semaphore signal(s) were erected in 1877 and distant signals in 18782 and Redbank obviously had a station master in charge.
Redbank ad colliery, meatworks and brickworks served by private sidings by 1900. When the Redbank Bundamba loop line opened in 19044 Redbank became the station controlling much of the coal traffic from the West Moreton coalfield. A weighbridge for weighing consignments from Redbank and nearby sidings was provided in 1881, and a new one in 1889 90. This role was replaced by Wacol in 1914
Reflecting its importance, a new station was built in 1914 and occupied in September or October 1914. Acetylene gas lighting was installed. It is one of a small number of stations built with a tiled roof. (Others including Ascot, Wynnum South and Rosewood.) Galvanised iron was the normal roofing material and tiles were not readily available in most of Queensland.
The station yard developed with refuge sidings provided in 1941 and 1961 and various signalling changes made, both for the growing mainline traffic and industrial sidings in the area. In 1975 there was a diagram of realignment at Redbank apparently a result of the formation sinking following the floods of January 1974. In 1959 a new signal cabin was opened at the western end of Redbank yard. Three positions of 2nd class signalman were abolished at Redbank in 1983, with the move to centralised signalling at Mayne, in 1983.
