Description
DescriptionOutside Wagon shop, south of traverser track. The Workshops Rail Museum was opened on 1 September 2002 on the site of the original Railway Workshops that was opened in 1864. It was the centre of rail construction, maintenance and technology in the State for decades. Over 200 steam locomotives were constructed here and during its peak over 3,000 people worked on the site. Additional Information Several steam locomotives were retained for special excursion or “historical” operation by the Queensland Railways (QR), at the request of the Australian Railway Historical Society (Qld Division). Initially this constituted a dozen locomotives but as they were withdrawn for mechanical reasons the number was reduced to four, by 1973, and to three by 1977.
The initial group was a dozen steam locomotives were held as part of this stable, comprising two BB181/4's (1077, 1079, and 1072), B181/4 843, C17s 974, 934, PB15's 732, 738, DD17S 1047, 1049, C16 38, and others. QR stipulated however that withdrawals of locomotives would take place in the event of uneconomic repairs becoming necessary to this fleet of locomotives.
The period of the 1970s was a time of further contraction of the steam locomotive fleet. Elements of the organisation were unsympathetic to the retention of what was considered an outmoded relic of the past, with an organisation that was focussing itself on the needs of a modern railway in the latter part of the twentieth century. By 1977 the available fleet had diminished to BB181/4 1079, C17 974, PB15s 732 and 738. PB15 732 was designated a locomotive for the use of the Commissioner for Railways.
738 was withdrawn from traffic, leaving an operating stable of three locomotives. A boiler tube failure led to the withdrawal of 1079 from traffic in 1977, but a decision was made to exchange the boiler on this locomotive and return it to service in 1978.
Throughout the 1980s, QR undertook basic maintenance of this fleet, overhauls were carried out on these locomotives, and the fleet was maintained at the Ipswich Railway Workshops.
