LeMass Ltd.

William (Bill) LeMass was business manager of Carter & Duncalfe from about 1919 to 1925. They were located opposite St Paul's Anglican Church in Brisbane Street. Instead of being the sole owner, in 1922 D. S. Carter decided to sell shares in the business to William LeMass and some others so that LeMass became a part-owner and LeMass Ltd. appears to come into usage for the first time. However, Bill LeMass left Carter & Duncalfe in late 1925 to open his own mercery called The Toggery Shop in O'Sullivan's Building at 100 Brisbane Street in premises vacated by the National Bank, and next to Jackson & Meyers the auctioneers. The former banking establishment required a fair amount of remodeling to become a shop suitable for housing a new mercery business. 

The Toggery Shop opened late November 1925 with stocks of footwear, shirts, hats, socks, braces, handkerchiefs, hose, collars and bathing suits for men. They were also agent for Alexander's, a Brisbane firm of dry cleaners. The Toggery Shop's aim was to deliver the best quality and value, and latest designs. In the beginning, the business was more often referred to as The Toggery Shop but as time rolled on through the second half of the 1920s, LeMass and The Toggery Shop were both used in the same ads with LeMass becoming more prominent.

Neighbouring businesses of The Toggery Shop in 1926 were W. M. Fox the chemist and the newsagency of D. McKelvie. All three shops were housed in the same building. Walker & Shenton (school book specialists) were located between LeMass and Fox in 1929. Jackson & Meyers remained next door. Around this era, the shop stocked and sold football knickers, athletic supporters, half hose, pull-ons and coat sweaters, and flannel sports trousers. Another occurrence in 1929 related to the registration of LeMass Ltd. as a new company. Subscribers included William LeMass himself, Catherine E. LeMass, H. E. Jones, J. F. Walker, J. B. P. Walker, Ellen Walker and H. G. H. Walker.

On Saturday 29 November 1930, Alex Nichol, a well known local tailor, opened a new tailoring business in Ipswich. It was co-located with Lemass Ltd, Men's Outfitters in Brisbane Street, opposite Bell Street. However, in early 1931 J. P. Walker Mercers Ltd. took over LeMass, and that name faded.  Toggery Shop stocks were available at Carter & Duncalfe in George Street in Brisbane for perhaps a couple of years to 1933 but then that name faded too.
