Jackson & Meyers

In October 1919, two World War I Returned Soldiers started a business enterprise together. They became auctioneers, real estate agents, valuers, and general commission agents. Their business premises were located in Room number 6 upstairs in O'Sullivan's Buildings at 100 Brisbane Street, opposite Bell Street. Jackson & Meyers's office remained in this building until at least 1960, over 40 years later. The partners declared that their motto was "fairness & civility" and that they would sell properties, collect rents, and perform auctions. In 1920 they became agents for Australian Mutual Fire Insurance Society Ltd. 

Jackson & Meyers were well known about town and were auctioneers for some of the most significant property and business sales in Ipswich over many years: 

• They were valuers and auctioneers to the City of Ipswich (council) for decades.
• Public auctions were conducted for lost and unclaimed property held at Ipswich Police Station.
• After World War II (1947)  Jackson & Meyers conducted the auction at Redbank Camp for the War Disposals Commission to dispose of surplus materials.
• In 1946 the firm auctioned Grant's bakery in Rosewood.
• Jackson & Meyers held an auction for the sale of Clydebank Colliery in 1939.
• They were involved in both 1930 and 1937 auctions of Brynhyfryd mansion and furnishings.
• The sale of Claremont was conducted in conjunction with W. B. Parkinson in 1933.
• They auctioned Bremer Wharf in 1932.
• Jackson & Meyers were involved in the sale of the Town Hall in 1928.
• In 1925 the firm were agents for the sale of  Commonwealth land. 

The firm was almost 30 years old when Len Jackson died in January 1949. Ern Meyers carried on the business using the same company name.

Jackson & Meyers continued to trade and were still located in O'Sullivan's Buildings in 1960. Their history after that is not known. Ernest Henry William Meyers died in 1982. 

The Toggery Shop For Men was located next door to Jackson & Meyers in the late 1920s. In the mid 1940s Nixon's Newsagency was next door.
