On The Homefront: Demographics

Description

The national Census and annual statistics of Queensland give a snapshot of the population during this time. The war years saw the suspension of publications such as these for at least three years; and there was a long gap between the Census of 1933 and the next conducted in 1947. While Census districts did not correspond exactly to Local Authority boundaries, and those municipal boundaries changed over time, the population figures still yield information about the growth of the Ipswich area by almost 10,000 people (or just under 25%) over a decade and a half.

During this time in Ipswich numbers of males and females were roughly the same; in the Shires men tended to outnumber women by 10% to 20%, depending on the year under study.
