Cafe Majestic
Cafe Majestic in Bell Street was already in existence by 1918. It appears in a block map of the time with Treagle's confectionery factory and shop next door, and A. & H. Haenke (drapers) on the other side. The cafe was about 4th from the corner of Brisbane Street on the same side of the road as the Caledonian Hotel.
Mr S. Marsh was the proprietor of the cafe from c.1919. In fact over the next 25 years in Ipswich it was known as Marsh's Cafe Majestic and often referred to as simply Marsh's cafe.
Throughout the 1930s and early 1940s the cafe was a popular meeting venue for local sporting clubs like: Brassall Swimming Club, Ipswich & West Moreton Cricket Club, Vigoro Association, Seekers Football Club, Harrier Club, Thistle Men's Hockey Club and Ipswich Vikings Life Saving Club. At this time, Marsh's cafe was also a popular venue for wedding receptions and many local couples had their wedding breakfasts there including Elsie Selwood and Arthur Coleman in 1937. Mrs Marsh sometimes made or decorated cakes for the celebrations. In the 1930s, the Marsh's also made and sold their own ice cream at the cafe.
After 25 years of running the cafe in Bell Street, in 1944 Mr & Mrs Marsh sold the business to Platin Anthony and the establishment once again became Cafe Majestic.
The cafe remained in operation until at least 1948.
