Marsh Family
John Moss Marsh was born on 6 March 1829 at West Wratting in Cambridgeshire, England. At the age of 25 he made the journey to Australia aboard the 'Ghengis Kahn' arriving in Moreton Bay on 14 August 1854. He married in Brisbane, to Rachel Potter who was travelling on the same ship with her brother Richard Potter. John Moss Marsh and Rachel his wife accompanied him went he went to work for W. Warry at Taromeo Station where he worked as a general station hand. He then worked for Simon Scott before settling in Ipswich in June 1861 near Limestone Hill.
John Moss March and Rachel (Nee Potter) had 8 children before Rachel passed away on 9 May 1866. John Moss Marsh married Ellen Saunders on the 14 January 1869, They had 4 children together. The following year the Marsh's moved to the Old Racecourse and he and his wife Ellen had an orchard on the property that bordered Wildey and Edward Streets at Raceview.
John and Rachel had eight children: Sarah Elizabeth; Alfred, William, Ann; Maria; Joseph; Charles and Christina (1866-1867).
John and Ellen had four children: Samuel, James, Ellen and Emma Sophia (1879-1879)
Sarah Elizabeth Marsh married Richard Roots; Alfred Marsh married Margaret Coulson; William Marsh married Martha Neary; Ann Marsh married Henry Bennett; Maria Marsh married James Law; Joseph Marsh married Jane Harvey then Jane Tucker; Charles Marsh married Harriett Grummitt.
Samuel Marsh married Fanny Ellen Parker; James Marsh married Anna Maria Legrand Phillips; Ellen Marsh married William Wilson Cumming.
James and his wife Anna, also built on this property at Raceview. James was a Moreton Shire Councillor from 1933 to 1946.
William established Marsh's Nursery in Thorn Street in the 1870s.
