DescriptionIpswich railway station was built in 1887. Although a new one had been planned for Darling Street in 1918, it never eventuated and the station remained the same until the mid 1980s.Additional Information pswich was the original terminal station of Queensland Railways.
There have been three stations at Ipswich and one which was not completed all within close proximity. The first station was on a north south alignment immediately south of the Bremer River road rail bridge. It opened on 31 July 1865. When the extension from Ipswich to Sherwood (Brisbane) opened on 5 October 1874, space did not a direct connection and trains had to reverse direction. When the Ipswich deviation was opened on 26 April 1875, it provided a direct line through Ipswich, the 1865 was last on a branch. Trains from Brisbane had to pass the junction and then back in, while those from Toowoomba could run straight in to the station but had to reverse out before continuing to Brisbane.
This was remedied when a contract was let to Henry Wyman on 9 March 1886 for 7446 pounds to build a new station on the through line, in a cutting. The new station opened on 17 October 1887.
This station had just one through platform with dock platforms either end. Work began in 1914 on substantial alterations which included building a new station west of the original station on the through alignment between West and Waghorn Streets, and island platforms with provision for dock platforms between the island faces at the western end for branch trains. Work continued slowly for five years, with major work including building a subway in line with West Street, drainage, new platform, and foundations for the station in 1919 20. The buildings were never erected.
The long awaited new station was built as part of an airspace development. Work began in 1974, with demolition of the water tank near the signal cabin being one of the first works.
