Stories behind the tombstone is the result of many hours of research by John Rossiter.
He wrote:
'Life'
Every cemetery is a repository for the bodies of those gone before us - a repository for the stories behind their lives. The Ipswich Cemetery, dating back to 1844, is no exception. The humour, the sadness, a rich person and the poor, a life well lived, and a life cut short due to an unfortunate accident; they are all there in one common place.
A little "digging" into the records reveals a wealth of information on how our early fellow citizens lived their lives. Whether a tombstone marks their grave or whether they lie beneath a plain bit of dirt, the estimated 36,000 burials in the Ipswich General Cemetery all have a story - their passage of life.
Just a small number of those have been revealed in these pages, as a reminder of life as it was.
