DescriptionDr James Atkin Wheeler (1861-1939) was born in Warrnambool, Victoria, in 1861. His father, Edmund Wheeler (1826-1870), died in 1870 and his mother, Clara Wheeler (nee Meares) ( -1872), died in 1872 and after he was orphaned he went to live with his aunt Fanny Harriet Kendall (nee Wheeler) (1822-1914) and her husband Richard John Kendall (c.1803 - 1895) in Ipswich.
He started school at the Boys Central School, now known as the Ipswich Central State School. He received a scholarship to the Ipswich Grammar School, where his Uncle Richard was a Master, or teacher. James became the dux of Ipswich Grammar School in 1875, 1876, 1877, 1878, 1879, and 1880. He is said to have won a Senior Physics Medal and a Senior Latin award in 1879.
He was the recipient of one of the first scholarships to Sydney University granted to Queenslanders, which may have been called the 1880 Queensland Exhibition Scholarship, and studied medicine.
James received a scholarship to study at Guy's Hospital in the United Kingdom. He sat exams at the University of London and earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees, which were top qualifications in the United Kingdom, and he may have been the first Australian to have done so.
He returned to Queensland in either 1890 or 1891 and began practicing medicine in Toowong, Brisbane. His home was called Claughton and was on Sherwood Road, Toowong.
In 1893, he married cousin Lillah Constance Wheeler (c.1865-1959) in St Paul's Anglican Church, Ipswich, Queensland, where his Uncle Robert was a Warden. They had four children; Dorothy Constance (Dors) Wheeler (1895-1988), Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Greenfield (nee Wheeler) (1897-1982), Edmund George Brumwell (Brum) Wheeler (1899 – 1970), and Francis James Kendall (Ken) Wheeler (1901 – 1973).
James was a lifetime member of the Toowong Bowling Club, being awarded the honour in August 1938. He was also a foundation member of the club.
He passed away in December 1939 at the age of 77 after a collapse in Ann Street, Brisbane. His wife and children survived him.
