Queensland Times (building)

The original building was designed by architect and former Ipswich mayor Samuel Shenton, assisted by George Brockwell Gill. It originally had an upper verandah with iron lace but was remodelled in 1939 and again the 1980s.

The Queensland Times reported on 14 April 1939 that “Gill has prepared plans and specifications involving radical alterations in design (apart from interior remodelling) to make the corner block a striking contribution to the city's- architecture, Messrs. Harper and Vincent are the successful tenderers, and it is expected that work will begin on Monday. The plans include cantilever awnings, and the creation of an imposing frontage on the angle of the building.”

In September 1939, the newspaper when commenting on the modern shop fronts in Ipswich, and that the Queensland Times was “keeping pace with the times” and that it was “one of the most attractive premises in the City.”
