Military Volunteers in 19th Century Ipswich - Chasing Our PastDate Created10th May 2022Program Chasing Our PastPresenterBrian RoughHostDeannah VeithAcknowledgementIpswich LibrariesCity & StateIpswich, QueenslandDescriptionWhen Queensland separated from New South Wales in late 1859 there was no army to protect the new colony's coastline. Ipswich was the first Queensland town in 1860 to form its own company of the Queensland Volunteer Rifle Brigade.
Over the next 40 years there were eight additional units formed in Ipswich including infantry, mounted infantry, artillery and an ambulance corps. Hundreds of Ipswich men served voluntarily in the ranks during that time, and some went on to serve during the Boer War.
Join historian Brian Rough to discover more about Queensland’s early military presence.
