Ipswich Early Settlers

People & Families
- The People & Families hub is a growing collection of profiles and histories of Ipswich's prominent identities and the less well known individuals and families who shaped the City's past, present, and future.
School Activity Sheets
- Searching for Gold in Ipswich: In this activity, students explore a little known incident in Ipswich history: the search for gold in Ipswich.
- Aspects of Daily Life: In this activity, students examine changing retail habits in Ipswich, from corner stores to supermarkets. You can read more about Ipswich's retail history in the Business & Industry hub.
- Mining and Welsh Settlement at Blackstone: In this activity, students explore the history of Ipswich suburb Blackstone and its early coal mining and Welsh history. The transcript and audio for Jessie Edwards' oral history is also available for the class to listen to. Additional content on Blackstone, including the history of Brynhyfryd, locally known as "The Castle" is also available on Picture Ipswich.
- Cemeteries - Our Living Heritage: In this activity, students explore the old Ipswich General Cemetery and learn about the meanings and symbols of headstones.
These are just a few examples of how you could use Picture Ipswich in year 5 History classes. If you have further suggestions, please add them as a Recollection on this page.
