One Mile
The suburb was located one mile (1.6km) from the center of Ipswich. The One Mile Estate was developed between 1909 and1950.
Well-known Ipswich architect, Will Haenke invited tenders to build a dwelling at One Mile in May 1911. In September 1946 it was reported in the Queensland times that 140 homes had been built in the ‘Model Suburb’ at One Mile Estate by the Housing Commission and it was expected that by the time the project was completed that the number of houses would have doubled. In 1951, 250 prefabricated Swedish houses to the design of Queensland Government Plans arrived at Archerfield. The two, three, and four bedroom units were bound for Acacia Ridge and Ipswich with eighty-three Swedish timber dwellings of various designs were to be erected on the Housing Commission Estate at One Mile.
In 1953 the Council agreed to a request to change the name of One Mile to Leichhardt because the name One Mile was not official and there was already a registered suburb called One Mile in Gympie.
