Description
DescriptionText and audio of 17 minute interview where the Councillor explains how early on he had to send Sandy home so she wouldn't be cut off, this left him to man his office. He talks of his role in organising and setting up evacuation centres in the Leichhardt / One Mile area and the subsequent use of the Ipswich Golf Club and the Avon Hall. He spent much of his time at the Avon Hall. He talks about the receiving of food from the local community until they were able to get supplies via the SES. He talks about the lack of available information and the value of the radio station. Sandy goes on to talk about her time spent at the Ipswich Grammar School, that was set up as one of the evacuation points for 300 or so families and mental health patients. She talks about the wonderful staff at the school and also many of the residents around the school who came and helped. She also helped out at the Ripley Church evacuation centre until she was able to get back over to Leichhardt where the relief centre became an office for helping people fill in the forms for getting government help. The floods occurred in January and peaked on Wednesday 12 January. More detailed information can be found in the local newspapers and media.
