Australian Joint Stock Bank

The Australian Joint Stock Bank was created in 1852 by an Act of the N.S.W. parliament. The bank existed in Ipswich from May 1858 and was located in Bell Street. This block of land in Bell Street later became the site of the railway station master's residence. F. O. Bryant was the manager.

William  John Taylor was manager from at least 1861-1868. The Taylors lived on the premises.

The bank moved to the corner of Bell and Brisbane Streets on 26 May 1863. 

For many years the bank was known locally as "Darvall's Bank" owing to the long tenure of manager Anthony W. Darvall.

In 1873  Good Templars Dining & Coffee Rooms run by Messrs. Palmer & Smith was located opposite the bank.

O'Sullivans Buildings were opposite the bank,  and in 1886 E. Bostock's New Auction Mart was tenanted in that building.

In 1910, the Australian Bank of Commerce took over the Australian Joint Stock Bank and in 1931, and in due course the Australian Bank of Commerce was acquired by the Bank of New South Wales (later Westpac).
