Halley's Bakery

Halley's bakery was established in 1875, on the corner of Ellenborough and Union Streets, opposite first railway station.  The business relocated to a parcel of land, bounded by West and Darling Streets, by 1914, after their previous site was taken over by the Railway Department.  The new site included a bakery, residence, shop and shed.

The bakery remained in operation until 1964 when it was sold and the business closed down. In the 1970s the bakery building was converted to a restaurant called the "Bakehouse Steakhouse".  In the 1990s, when it was known as "Bogart's" the interior still showed signs of its bakery origins including:

• remnants of two coke ovens
• brick bakery walls and chimneys
• timber roof trusses and Boyle roof vents
• main bakery space including area covered with metal floor tiles, kitchen area and bar area
• bread cooling room including unpainted timber ceiling and external sliding timber doors
• lime wash finishes on internal brick walls
• remnants of the external sign on the west facade
• flour room removed
