The Rosevale Co-operative Dairy Company was a typical example, opening in the 1890s with two large steam-driven separators which were used by 30 farmers. Others included Lanefield (established in 1890) and several smaller ones at Rosewood. However by the turn of the century, many farmers were able to buy a cheaper hand separator to use at home. Sometimes several families banded together to buy a separator, or a farmer installed one at his property and his neighbours paid a small amount to come and use it.

Rosevale Co-op closed in 1908, but a collection depot was then set up at Rosevale to collect cream, test it and send it on to Booval Butter Factory.
