Description

DescriptionStreetscape taken from the Post Office Clock Tower (constructed 1901), looking west along Brisbane Street. The clock tower visible belongs to the old Mechanics’ School of Arts, later Town Hall (now Ipswich Art Gallery). Built between 1861 and 1864, financial difficulties in 1869 led to the Ipswich Council taking on the building for use as council chambers. Following the death of Governor Blackall in 1871, a memorial committee was formed, proposing the addition of a tower and clock to the building, this being erected in January 1879. The clock was relocated to the former Council Chambers at Sandgate, Brisbane, in 1912. The Blackall Memorial fountain, visible beside the clock, was centred in the intersection of Nicholas and Brisbane Streets, and was also erected in 1879. Due to increased traffic, the memorial was relocated to the corner of Outridge Street and Chelmsford Avenue, Denmark Hill, in 1927. St Paul’s Church of England (visible behind the clock tower) was built between 1855 and 1859. On the Ellenborough Street Corner is C. Vogler. C.J. Vogler & Sons is a hobby shop, established in 1877 and continues to operate in Ipswich at a different location in Brisbane Street (2015). This building was replaced by Bostock Chambers in 1915, built for real estate agent Enoch Bostock. Other business include John Hunter’s Boot Palace; James Richey and Co. “Commercial House” (providers of millinery, drapery and men’s mercery departments); and The Fred Smith Co. (drapers, mercers and clothiers)).

The photo was possibly taken after rain, as the streets look wet.
