Nicholas Street
Description
Place TypeRoads & StreetsHistory
Henry Wade, the Chief Surveyor at Moreton Bay, surveyed and prepared a proposed plan for the town of Limestone in 1842 (later named Ipswich). The plan included names for the streets that are now in the Central Business District.
The earliest mention of Nicholas Street in local newspapers was in the Moreton Bay Courier on Saturday 10 May 1851. An advertisement for Allotments 18 and 19 of Section 8 in Brisbane and Nicholas Streets read:
"To Let or Lease both corner allotments, adjoining each other, and being upon the Main Thoroughfare, through this rising Township,
possess every advantage in a business point of view."
