DescriptionLooking west up Brisbane Street. Queensland Times office on the left. The building was constructed in 1888 as new offices for the Queensland Times, a newspaper that was founded in 1859. It was designed by architect and former Ipswich mayor Samuel Shenton, assisted by George Brockwell Gill. It originally had an upper veranda with iron lace but was remodelled in 1939 and again the 1980s. The next business is Ipswich Fruit Mart, the the Viola Cafe, then Hunter & Stockwell Real Estate/Travel Agents, Paramount Butchers, at 134 is the Queensland Government Savings Bank, at 138 Vogler & Sons, selling model trains and other hobby items, the T & G Insurance building, and the UFS Dispensary. Bostock and Colthup Chambers is on the right. Bostock Chambers was built in 1915 for real estate agent Enoch Bostock. The Colthup’s were a well-known Ipswich business family. The architect was George Brockwell Gill. From the right a newsagency, Lutvey’s Ladies and Mens’ Wear, Ipswich Cash and Carry and the Goleby sign.Additional Information Information taken from Ipswich City Council publication, Ipswich Heritage Trails, Trail No 2: Top of Town.
