In December 1864 George Simpson was leasing a large house on The Terrace at North Ipswich from Patrick Donigan when he applied for a liquor license. The license was granted in January 1865 thus initiating the business to be known as the Queensland Hotel. Later the following year the owner of the property Patrick Donigan became licensee and would remain so until close to his death in 1890.

In December 1921 the hotel would become known as The Strand.
