F. Goleby & Sons
Frederick Goleby, originally started his business as a saddle and harness maker in 1881 in Patrick O'Sullivan's buildings on Brisbane Street. They made leather goods as well including luggage. Subsequently Goleby moved to Angus Macdonald's premises on the corner of Brisbane and West Streets.
In 1892, owing to the success of business he erected a 2-storey shop (later used by W.T. Pratt). When business continued to grow he bought and erected a brick building on the adjoining property.
In 1910, Frederick's 2 sons were working with him. Frederick died in 1920 but his sons carried on the business. Goleby's was still operational until at least the 1970s. Their building on the corner of Brisbane and Wests Streets is now an art supplies shop and entertainment venue.
Frederick lived at Balmoral, 2 Waghorn Street, subsequently moving to 61 Roderick Street. He was Mayor of Ipswich in 1906.
