Cheyne Family

Charles Cheyne was born in Scotland on 10 June 1844.

After 1840, Australia offered money for land grants to skilled workers to encourage immigrants from Scotland to relocate.  At that time, Charles worked for the North British Railways in Scotland but he decided to move to Australia. Charles and his wife Jane came to Australia shortly after their wedding on 6 January 1870. Charles had taken up a Land Selection earlier in 1868 through the Commissioner for West Morton, Queensland, Ipswich Land Office. 

Charles worked for Mrs. Cribb as a Groom and gardner and the family lived at 19 Warwick Road in Ipswich. He died at his home on 31 May 1931. Jane died a little over three years later on 7 October 1933.

Charles and Jane Cheyne had nine children after settling at 19 Warwick Road. Their children were:

• James born 1874, died 1875 in Ipswich
• Charles James born 1876
• William Alexander born 1878
• Fredrick George born 1880, he married Alice Brooks. Frederick died 1 November 1952 in Ipswich, having lived at 19 Warwick Road his whole life. He was the chauffeur for Doctor Brown.
• Harry Walter born 1883
• Edith Jane, “Nean” born 1886, died 1978 in Ipswich
• Helen Elizabeth “Nell” born 1890, died 1964 in Ipswich
• Jessie Kathleen born 1993, died 1894 in Ipswich

The Cheyne family were Presbyterians and attended St. Stephens Church.  After Charles Cheyne died on 31 May 1931, his wife Jane purchased a family burial plot (A06181 R3 G30 Presbyterian New B Section) at the Ipswich General Cemetery.  Many of the Cheyne family are buried in this family plot.
