Clem Family
The Clem family left their home in Germany to settle in Australia in 1861. Their arrival port was Hervey Bay and in October of the same year they made their way to Moreton Bay where Joahnnes Clem was contracted to work for Mort and Laidley.
Johannes and Anna Cloem (Clem)
Johannes was born in Hessen, Germany in 1815. He married Anna Elizabeth Bach who was born in 1811. The couple arrived in Moreton Bay on 9 October 1861 aboard the "Grassbrook". Nine days after landing the family moved to Franklyn Vale where Johannes was contracted to work for Messrs. Mort and Laidley. Two years later the family moved to Brassall and lived in Hunter street where they had a market garden and grew grapes.
A newspaper report in the Queensland Times on 6 March 1929 referred to them as John and and Elizabeth Clem. John and Elizabeth had five children:
- George Daniel born in 1840 in Rittenan, Hesser, Germany, died 5 March 1927 in Queensland.
- Anna Catharina born in 1848 in Rittenan, Hesser, Germany, died 4 March 1929 in Queensland. She married John Johannas (John) Bloom.
- Heinrich born in 1851 in Rittenan, Hesser, Germany, died 4 October 1936 in Haigslea. He married Pauline Caroline Auguste Koch 11.02.1923.
- Casper Clem born in 1851 in Rettenau Hessen Cassel Germany, died 15 September 1937 in Ipswich; Auguste died in 1921 in Queensland.
- Auguste died in 1921.
Anna Elizabeth and Johannes (John) both died in Ipswich, Queensland. Anna Elizabeth on 3 September 1877 and Johannes (John) died on 13 April 1901.
George Daniel Clem
George Daniel was born in 1840 in Rittenan, Hesser, Germany. In arrived in Queensland with his parents in 1861 and obtained work at Franklyn Vale. He spent a few years at Sandy Creek (Glamorgan) and lived in Hunter Street in Brassall. George had a number of occupations including: working on the early railway and he was the Government Road Overseer and the Overseer for the Walloon Divisonal Board.
He married Augusta Elizabeth Baartz on 6 February 1869 in Dalby, Queensland. She was born in 1848 in Marienwerder, Barnim, Brandenburg, Germany. George and Augusta had 6 children, all born in Queensland:
- Amelia born 1870 at Goondiwindi
- George Clem born 1872, died in Southport, Queensland.
- John Friedeich born 1875, died in 1930 in Queensland.
- Ernest Henrich born 1877, died in 1960 in Queensland.
- Ann Elizabeth born 2 August 1880, died in 1958.
- Alice Gertrude born 8 May 1884.
- Emma Lydia born 3 July 1889.
Augusta died on 4 June 1919 in Ipswich, Queensland and George Daniel died on 5 March 1927 in Queensland.
Anna Catharina Clem
Anna Catharina was born in 1848 in Rittenan, Hesser in Germany. She married Johannas Bloom c.1877 in Queensland and they had 8 children:
- John born 1874, died in 1917 in Queensland.
- Augusta Christina born 24 October 1875 in Ipswich, died 7 August 1938 in Queensland.
- Ellen Mary born 1894 in Queensland.
- Anna Elizabeth born 30 November 1915.
- Henry died 15 November 1909 in Queensland.
- William died 1942 in Queensland.
- Walter
- George died 1942 in Queensland.
Anna died on 4 March 1929 and Johannas on 17 February 1945.
Heinrich Clem
Born on 19 December 1851 in Rittenan, Hesser, Germany. Heinrich was the son of Johannes and Anna Cloem (Clem). His first wife was Auguste Henriette Friederike Ballin who he married on 19 May 1876 At Sandy Creek in Queensland. She was born on 7 September 1857 in Brandenberg, Duren, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Heinrich and Auguste had ten children before her death on 21 July 1921 in Haigslea, Queensland.
Heinrich was a Homestead Selector at Walloon (now Ironbark – Ivan Lane) and later moved to Kirchheim (Haigslea). The family owned a number of properties in and around the Marburg and Haigslea areas in the early 1900s. The original eighty-two acre selection taken up by Heinrich now forms part of the Borallon Correction Facility on the outskirts of Ipswich. Heinrich was a member of the Walloon Shire Council.
He worked as a shepherd in his youth and as a boundary rider in the Mount Walker area. Heinrich later became a carpenter and assisted in building many bridges and buildings in the West Moreton District.
Heinrich's second wife was Pauline Caroline Auguste Habermann (nee Koch), daughter of Daniel and Auguste Koch (nee Volker). They were married on 11 February 1923 in Queensland. She died on 12 September 1936 in Taroom, Queensland and was buried in the Ipswich Cemetery. On the day that his second wife died, Heinrich contracted pneumonia and died three weeks later on 4 October 1936 in Haigslea, Queensland.
Heinrich married Pauline Caroline Auguste Koch on 11 February 1923 in Queensland. She died 12 September 1936 in Taroom and was buried in the Ipswich Cemetery.
Auguste Henriette Fredericke Clem (nee Ballin)
Auguste was born on 7th September 1857 in Brandenberg, Duren, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Auguste was the second wife of Heinrich Clem, they married on 7 September 1857 in Brandenberg.
Heinrich and Auguste had ten children:
- William Louis born 4 May1889 in Queensland, died 15 February 1958 in Ipswich.
- Heinrich Casper born 1 August1880 in Queensland, died 19 February 1940 in Nambour.
- Wilhelmina Anna Elizabeth born 23 April 1877 in Queensland, died 27 June1967 in Queensland.
- Friedrich Wilhelm born 8 March 1885 in Queensland, died 18 August 1967 in Ipswich.
- George born 3 February 1883 in Queensland, died 15 July 1948 in Queensland.
- Lilian Augusta born 26 June 1894 in Queensland, died 8 July 1978.
- Emma Gertrude born 23 September 1891 in Queensland, died 30 December 1987 in Queensland.
- Violet Lena born 12 December 1898 in Queensland, died 23 December 1965.
- Victor Walter born 4 November1896 in Queensland.
- Walter Hermann born 23 February 1888 in Queensland, died 13 July 1888 in Queensland.
Auguste died on 21 July 1921 in Haigslea.
William Louis Clem
William was born on 4 May 1889 in the Ipswich region. Known as Lou, he was the son of Heinrich and Auguste Clem. William married Sarah Huth on 15 December 1915 in Queensland. Sarah was born 12 February 1891 in Roadvale.
William and Sarah had 3 children:
- Isobel Edna born 23 March 1917 in Queensland.
- Allan Louis born 24 August 1919 in Eumundi, died 10 February 1951 in Ipswich.
- Kevin Noel.
William died on 15 February 1958 in Ipswich and Sarah died on 25 August 1978 in Ipswich.
Heinrich Casper Clem
Heinrich Casper, second son of Heinrich and Auguste Clem was born on 1 August 1880. He married Martha Oppermann on 3 March 1908 in Brisbane. She was born on 1 1 April 1881 in Queensland.
Heinrich Casper and Martha had 2 children:
- Elma Rosina born 16 December 1908 in Queensland, died 9 January 1921 in Queensland.
- Sylvia Elizabeth who died on 30 September 1931 in Queensland.
Heinrich Casper died on 19 February 1940 in Nambour and Martha died in 1978 in Queensland.
Wilhelmina Anna Elizabeth Clem
Heinrich and Auguste Clem's daughter Wilhelmina was born on 23 April 1877 in Queensland. She married Frederick William Linning in 1901 in Queensland. Frederick was born in 1871 in Queensland.
Wilhelmina and Frederick had 3 children:
- Cecil Louis born 17 December 1901 in Queensland, died in January 2003 in Queensland.
- Leila Gladys born in 1903 in Queensland, died 22 February 1977 in Queensland.
- Hazel Ena born in 1909 in Queensland.
Frederick and Wilhelmina died in Queensland, Frederick in 1951 and Wilhelmina on 27 June 1967.
Casper Clem
Casper was born in 1851 in Rettenau Hessen Cassel. He married Ernestine Fredericke Mieland, daughter of Christian Frederick Mieland and Marie Christine (nee Hartdratah) on 10 September 1877 in Queensland. Ernestine was born on 27 January 1860 in Cremzow. Casper worked in various bush occupations including shingle-splitting (for roofing), fencing, road work and he worked as a firewood merchant. Casper purchased his father’s property at Brassall but moved to the corner of Clem and Fahey Streets after the 1893 flood.
Caspar and Ernestine had 14 children:
- Johannas Louise (twin) born 1878 in Queensland, died in 1948 in Queensland.
- Carl Friederick (twin) born 17 April 1878 in Queensland, died 8 October 1955 in Queensland.
- Anna Ernestine born 1879 in Queensland.
- William Henry born in 1880 in Queensland, died 16 October 1945 in Queensland.
- Elizabeth Augusta born in 1883 in Queensland.
- George August born 10 January 1885 in Queensland, died 21 May 1944 in Queensland.
- Caspar Fredrich Albert born 25 October 1886 in Queensland, died in 1955 in Queensland.
- Emma Wilhelmine born 26 September 1888 in Queensland.
- Edward born in 1890 in Queensland, died 25 February 1925 in Queensland.
- Amelia born 23 November 1892 in Ipswich, died in 1981 in Ipswich.
- Mary Alice born 8 January 1895 in Queensland, died 16 September 1916 in Queensland.
- Arthur Frank born 2 May 1898 in Queensland, died in 1970 in Ipswich.
- Walter Ernest born 3 December 1899 in Queensland, died 11 September 1974 in Brisbane.
- Jemima Josephine born 18 February 1902 in Queensland, died in Ipswich. She married Cecil Francis Chapman on 26 June 1928 in Queensland.
Ernestine and Casper both died in Ipswich Queensland in the same year, Ernestine on 28 May 1937 and Casper on 15 September 1937.
