Bertram's Cakes & Cafe
In the beginning James Murdoch Bertram delivered his cakes and bakery goods by horse & cart. In October 1932 after the business took off, Bertram moved to a shop over George Shearer’s premises at 199 Brisbane Street in the Goleby building.
In 1933 James' new wife Florence worked the shop front while Bertram baked out back. Eventually daughter Karin would also join the business.
Bertram's served grills, business lunches & teas; producing wedding cakes, sponge cakes, Christmas cakes and puddings, scones, etc. They also had a milk bar and soda fountain.
Bertram's played a special role in World War II: US Army cooks rented the bakery to bake for their troops stationed in the area and, Bertram's themselves supplied Wacol Army Barracks with bread and cakes.
In 1987 the name of the business was changed to Florance's Cakes & Cafe. By this time Karin and her husband Walter Florance were working this long established Ipswich business. By 1997 they owned it.
