Meals for Children
During the hot Queensland summer, easy to prepare meals were recommended such as a fruit juice in water with a plain biscuit after waking up. This was followed by a breakfast of cereal with milk and sugar or bread and butter with fruit, lettuce or marmalade. A picnic lunch consisted of sandwiches that could be savoury or sweet with a fruit juice or lemonade. Afternoon tea was jelly with biscuits or a piece of chocolate and a dry roll. Dinner which was the main meal of the day may have been a vegetable soup, fresh meat, vegetable or salad with potato. It was noted that eating a salad with a hot meal was unusual in Australia. Dessert was a tart or anchovy toast or devilled sardines.

Meal - Time Suggestions, 1947
The main meal was eaten in the middle of the day or after work, depending on personal preference or convenience. Less formal meals could be served for the meal not eaten as the main meal of the day. This could include apples with sausage cores, baked eggs and peanut butter, celery pie, cheesikins, hamettes with bananas, little brain pies (with sheep's brains), dutch roll, tomato pie, tripe and oyster savoury or lamb barbecue. For dessert the options included trifle, apricot surprise, banana split or apple Betty.
