Description

DescriptionThis is a portrait of William Cafferky who was the Chief Fire Officer at the Ipswich Fire Brigade for 30 years. Prior to being employed in the Fire Service Mr Cafferky trained as a cabinet maker and fitted and furnished many properties in Ipswich. He also established his own business and performed some teaching of woodwork at the Ipswich Technical College. He died in April 1938 at the age of 60 years. The Ipswich Fire Brigade was established in 1865. Although there are no definite records of the beginning of activities except that in July 1865 the brigade was activated when a fire destroyed the old timber building of Cribb & Foote in Bell Street. A fire station building was erected in Brisbane Street between 1918-1920 and demolished in the early 1960s.References (offline)Queensland Times, 06-04-1938Ipswich Municipal Centenary by Leslie E Slaughter, 1960:65
