DescriptionThis is a portrait of Emily Barker, who was born in Ipswich in 1860. Miss Barker was a teacher at the Ipswich Central Girls and Infants School and North Ipswich School. She taught for 53 years before retiring in 1926 at the age of 66. Miss Barker began her teaching career in 1873 at the age of 13 years at the St Paul’s Ecumenical School in Ipswich (later to become the Ipswich Central girls and infants school), where she was being taught at the time. Her teachers saw great potential in her and she became a Pupil teacher. Seven years after this she became a fully qualified teacher and was sent to teach at the North Ipswich School where she remained from 1873-1902. She later transferred to Rosewood School but shortly after moved back to the North Ipswich School position. Emily Barker was also president of the Ipswich Branch of the Country Women’s Association and held this until her death in 1950.References (offline)“Ipswich Central School 125 years”.Queensland Times, 31-08-1950
