Greenham Family

The Greenham family arrived in Ipswich in 1855, just thirteen years after the area was opened to free settlement. John Greenham senior, his wife Maria and son John junior settled in Newtown, living near the Old Racecourse.

John Greenham Senior

John Greenham senior was born in Norton sub Hamdon in Somerset in 1813. He and his wife Maria arrived in Ipswich with their fourteen year old son, John junior in 1855. The electoral roll lists his addresses in 1864 to 1870 as Pring Street, Newtown or just Newtown and in the 1880s it was just listed as Newton.

John died in June 1901 at the age of eighty-eight. The Queensland Times article reporting on his death noted that "for some years he had a farm out near the Old Racecourse, and, after retiring from it, he lived quietly for a while at Newtown, subsequently residing in Thorn Street, alongside the home of his son, Mr. J. Greenham, junior.

Maria Greenham (Nee Lang)
Maria Lang was born in Somersetshire in 1813. She died in Ipswich on 8 July 1904 at the age of ninety-one at the residence of her son, John Greenham junior in Limestone Street. She was survived by her son and five grandchildren: Dr. Eleanor Greenham (Brisbane), Messrs. J. E. Greenham (Bank of Queensland, Brisbane), H. J. Greenham (Ipswich), H. G. Greenham (Chicago, USA) and C. E. Greenham (Bank of New South Wales, Ipswich).
