Ipswich Heritage Trails
Original heritage trails
Three formats of heritage trails have been created since the Ipswich Heritage Program commenced in the early 1990s. Nine, A5 sized printed booklets, containing 13 trails were researched and written by historian Robyn Buchanan and published by Ipswich City Council.
Then & Now heritage trails
The original trails were reviewed and a new series titled 'Then & Now' were printed as foldout glossy brochures. Content for the brochures was once again, written by Robyn Buchanan, with the graphics and layout for each brochure being prepared in-house by the City Design Branch.
Additional hard copy brochures included three that covered "People, Places and Events" in the City Centre, Eastern Suburbs and the rural area. In this instance a significant person or event had to be associated with an historical site.
Three Children's Heritage Trails were created after consultation with a local school. Year five students at the time said that they wanted hard copy trails not an online format, which saw the creation of trails provided in pdf format for printing as required.
Online Trails
Embracing technology, thoughts turned to providing the traditional trail in an audio format, resulting in the Queens Park audio trail which was launched in 2013. This online presence is being expanded with the addition of "A Journey in Time" street themed trails using a story based approach as shown in the Nicholas Street trail, and with map based trails. Map based, themed trails are being created in two different formats, one hosted outside Picture Ipswich, including the George Brockwell Gill and Will Haenke Heritage Trails, the other created within Picture Ipswich, such as the Schools Heritage Trail.
