DescriptionDriveway to residence of John McQueen, Raceview. John McQueen’s grandfather, William, established the Box Flat Mine in 1897, possibly naming it after the box trees found on the site. One of the deepest mines in Australia when it closed in 1987, by July 1972 it was employing 250 miners and producing 16,000 tons of coal a week, mostly supplying Swanbank Power Station. On the 30th of July 1972, a fire was discovered in one of the tunnels. Miners and rescue workers were sent in to control the fire, which was getting out of hand. At 2:45am on July 31st people as far away as Rosewood were woken by an explosion at the mine. 17 men lost their lives and others were injured above ground. With a rescue mission deemed too dangerous, the tunnel was sealed and the bodies of the miners were never recovered. In the wake of the disaster, Robert McQueen, William’s son, and John’s father, sold the mine within a few years, and John, whose only brother had died during the Second World War, would inherit the family fortune. At the age of 24 he built this modernist design house and started to follow a passion for big game hunting. Over the years his collection of animals grew to include a black bear, polar bear, a grizzly bear, lions, tigers, deer, foxes, eagles, elephants, monkeys, and wallabies, all on display in this house. After his death in 2001, at the age of 62, his collection of big game trophies was auctioned off, attracting hundreds of curious visitors and bidders.References (offline)Queensland Times 16th June 1987
